أنشئت الوكالة الموريتانية للأنباء فاتح يوليو 1975 باسم "الوكالة الموريتانية للصحافة (AMP)" وبثت أول برقية على شريطها الإخباري في نفس اليوم وبالتزامن مع صدور أول عدد من جريدة الشعب بطبعتيها العربية والفرنسية. وفي 04 أبريل سنة 1990 أعيدت هيكلة المؤسسة باسمها الحالي (الوكالة الموريتانية للأنباء - Agence Mauritanienne d’information) بعد دمجها مع الشركة الوطنية للصحافة لتصبح مؤسسة عمومية ذات طابع إداري، تتمتع بالاستقلال المالي وتخضع لوصاية الوزارة المكلفة بالاتصال. وأسندت إليها عدة مهام، تتمثل أساسا في جمع وتوزيع الأخبار الوطنية، والمساهمة في نشر الثقافة والتعريف بالبلد. تقوم الوكالة بالمهام التقليدية لوكالات الأنباء من خلال شريط إخباري وموقع على الانترنت بالعربية والفرنسية والإنجليزية يرصد كل الأحداث الوطنية، وتعتبر المصدر الأول والموثوق لأخبار موريتانيا. بالإضافة إلى منصات على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي، ويوميتي: "الشعب" و"أوريزون" ومجلتي "الشعب" و"أوريزون" الشهرية. وتتمتع "وما" بعلاقات تعاون وشراكة مع كبريات وكالات الأنباء العالمية، كما أنها عضو نشط في التجمعات المهنية الإقليمية والقارية.
