They were formed by selecting current AKB48 members from the "OUT OF 48" audition, which was open to thousands of general applicants. "UNLAME" is the opposite of "lame," which means boring or unoriginal. It expresses the concept of a unique group, an anti-unique group, and embodies their desire to become a group that can expressively and individually unconventionally fit into existing formats.
