Statens vegvesen arbeider for at både gående, syklende, kjørende og kollektivreisende skal komme trygt fram. Statens vegvesen skal utvikle gode veisystemer som alle kan bruke, der transporten ikke fører til alvorlig skade på mennesker eller miljø. Vi er veimyndighet for riksveiene, og har ansvar for å forvalte, utrede, planlegge, bygge, drifte og vedlikeholde riksveier. Vi er også løyvemyndighet for riksveiferjesamband samt person- og godstransport, og tildeler eneretter til drift av riksveiferjesamband i tillegg til å ha tilsyn med kjøretøy og trafikanter. Vi er en stor samfunnsaktør underlagt Samferdselsdepartementet som består av seks fagdivisjoner og et Vegdirektorat.
