After spending over three years in the Philippines involved in philanthropic and humanitarian work, I discovered that good intentions don’t always lead to good outcomes. In a place where poverty makes survival the priority, kindness can be seen as weakness, and help is often taken for granted or redirected toward quick gains. I learned that trying to “teach a man to fish” doesn’t always secure his future — sometimes the fishing pole ends up sold or gambled away in hopes of instant reward.
