Vi er også løyvemyndighet for riksveiferjesamband samt person- og godstransport, og tildeler eneretter til drift av riksveiferjesamband i tillegg til å ha tilsyn med kjøretøy og trafikanter. Vi er en stor samfunnsaktør underlagt Samferdselsdepartementet som består av seks fagdivisjoner og et Vegdirektorat.
